On May 21st, I, along with Michael Yoch, SVP of Product; Alisa, March, Art Director; and Evan Samek, Lead UI/UX Designer, had the pleasure of attending the 17th Annual Webby Awards to accept HelloWallet’s award for the Best Financial Services Website of 2013.
Walking into Cipriani Wall Street as the ceremony was about to begin, we had no idea what to expect, but our hopes for the night were far exceeded in no time. The food was as good as the celebrity sightings, and the attendees and presenters kept the show lively from beginning to end. A producer who was seated at our table put it well. She had been to the Grammys, The Emmys, and The Oscars, but The Webbys, she explained, was her favorite awards show of all for one simple reason: at the other shows, everyone had won for the same reason. At the Emmys it was acting, at the Grammys it was singing, but at the Webby’s, each person in the room had won for something unique. There were engineers, designers, comedians, filmmakers, and marketers. One was the brains behind an interactive web-based documentary, another was an Obama impersonator who had starred in a series of YouTube clips. But they were all there because they are passionate about working to make the Internet as innovative as possible.
Not only did we meet many of the fascinating Webby winners, but we heard the hilarious 5 Word Speeches that the Webbys are known for, and gave our own: “Thirteen Thousand Banks, One HelloWallet.” From Kevin Spacey’s suggestion that “The Oscars should do this” to the inventor of the Gif’s revelation that “It’s pronounced Jif, not Gif,” one minute didn’t go by without a raucous laugh from the audience (although that could have had something to do with the constant flow of wine).
